ACTIVE INGREDIENTS

Arnica montana (also known as leopard's bane, wolf's bane), is a European flowering plant with large yellow capitula grown in southern Iberia. When used topically in a gel, Arnica was found to have the same effect as the use of NSAIDs (ibuprofen) in treating the symptoms of hand osteoarthritis.

Arnica is currently used in liniment and ointment preparations used for muscle pain, sprains, and bruises. Commercial arnica preparations are frequently used by professional athletes. The thymol derivatives concentrated in the plants' roots have been clinically shown to be effective vasodilators of subcutaneous blood capillaries.

Arnica preparations used topically have been demonstrated to act as an anti-inflammatory and assist normal healing processes by facilitating transport of blood and fluid accumulations through a dilating action of subcutaneous blood capillaries.

Camphor is readily absorbed through the skin and produces a feeling of cooling similar to that of menthol and acts as slight local anesthetic and antimicrobial substance. Camphor is an active ingredient (along with menthol) in vapor-steam treatments and cough suppressants.

Harpagophytum procumbens, also called grapple plant, wood spider and most commonly Devil's Claw, is a plant of the sesame family. It got its name from the peculiar appearance of its hooked fruit. The plant's large tuberous roots are used medicinally to reduce pain and fever, and to stimulate digestion. European colonists brought Devil's Claw home where it was used to treat arthritis. The two active ingredients in Devil's Claw are harpagoside and beta-sitosterol. It is claimed that these possess anti-inflammatory properties. The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia recognises Devil's Claw as having analgesic, sedative and diuretic properties.

Menthol occurs naturally in peppermint oil. Menthol has local anesthetic and anti-inflamatory qualities, and it is widely used to relieve minor throat irritation.

WHERE IS THE ALOE VERA GROWN?

A hardy plant, Aloe Vera needs little water and plenty of light, which makes Fuerteventura an ideal place to grow Aloe Vera Barbadensis. Over recent years the plant is becoming as important a crop to the island's economy now that natural medicine is becoming more popular and often more effective. Indeed, recently the Canary Island's Government have announced financial aid of up to 50% to encourage the cultivation of the plant on Fuerteventura. The area is now called Aloe Land.

Despite its cactus-like appearance, the Aloe Vera is in fact a member of the lily family - lilacae - which includes garlic. There are over 400 species of Aloe Vera but the species which has the almost magical healing qualities is ALOE VERA BARBADENSIS which is the type most prevalent in Fuerteventura.

Natural Solter Laboratories of Benitachell, Alicante, Spain is well aware of the healing properties of the Aloe Vera plant and with its antioxidants and increased cell-regenerating properties it is reputed to be an effective anti-ageing aid.

ALOE VERA BARBADENSIS looks like a small agave plant. The adult plant grows to about 60-70 cm. Small plants often have white marks on the leaf which disappear as the plant grows. When the plant is about 2 or 3 years old a leaf grows in springtime which then stems off into one or two smaller branches which produce yellow flowers.

It is from the inside of the leaf that the most important part of the Aloe Vera plant is extracted - the gel. The skin, or outer leaf is of no use and should be removed. It is also important to drain off the juice "aloin" which lies between the skin and the gel. This is a yellow/red sap which keeps the gel of the plant cool, therefore protecting the valuable minerals and vitamins within. Even on the hottest of days if you cut open the leaf of an Aloe Vera plant the gel will be quite cold. Aloin, however, will stain skin and clothing, it is bitter and should not be taken internally - it used to be marketed as a laxative (You have been warned !)

Research into the Aloe Vera gel continues and some element of mystery remains, although most research agrees that Aloe Vera is particularly effective in the treatment of burns, cuts, grazes, bruises, allergic reactions and dermatological conditions. This is due in part to the fact that the Aloe Vera gel acts as a natural anti-histamine and contains an aspirin like compound called Salicylic Acid.

Aloe Vera also speeds up the healing process (some studies show healing is increased to eight times the normal rate), which is attributed to the fact that Aloe Vera gel provides 20 of the 22 amino acids required by humans, including 7 of the 8 essential ones which are not produced by the body itself.

Gingko Biloba - 5% - is a known for its therapeutic properties in skin care as a vasodilator, increasing circulation, improving sebaceous secretions, decreasing capillary hyper-permeability, improving tissue irrigation and activating cell metabolism (especially in the cortex, by increasing glucose and oxygen uptake). It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic properties.

Vitamin E oil - 1% - is one such naturally occurring oil which is soluble in lipid and is non-enzymatic. Vitamin E oil when applied on the skin, acts an an antioxidant which prevents the formation of free radicals on the skin and protects it from any kind of damage. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. It is useful for reducing the visible fine lines and wrinkles of the skin and thus makes the skin look younger.

Collagen and Elastin (0.5% each) are responsible for the strength and elasticity of the skin. Collagen is the most important integral component of the dermis connective tissue. Elastin is a fibrous protein of the connective tissue originating from the fibroblasts. Unlike collagen, the elastic fibers are thinner, from 1 to 3 Tm in diameter but thicker in the lower dermis where they lie parallel to the cutaneous surface, becoming thinner as they approach the epidermis. Elastin helps skin to return to its original position when pressed or pulled.

Glycerin (also referred to as glycerol) is a skin-friendly humectant which attracts water to the skin. It help maintain the water balance in the intercellular matrix and in so doing it maintains the skin's homeostasis. It has also been suggested that glycerin found in this matrix helps other lipids to perform their work more effectively. As well as being a humectant, glycerin is a skin-conditioning agent, skin protectant and viscosity decreasing agent.
